Newport

Newport is located in Eastern Rock County.  From 1880-1900 Newport grew quickly, trees were planted and streets were laid out.  Newport Post Office was established on January 22, 1884, with Walter Groom as postmaster.  Newport’s first newspaper was the Newport Age in 1885.

The Northwestern Railroad worked its way to Newport in 1881.  Newport became the "Hay Capitol" of the world.  In July of 1902 about 25,000 tons of hay was shipped from Newport which amounted to over 2,750 carloads.  The claim made was that “Newport ships more hay than any other country town in the world.”

Although the population of Newport has declined in the last few decades, it remains a thriving and close-knit community.  You will find Grandma’s Park in downtown Newport, a great place to rest under the shade of many trees.  You will find services for fuel, food, drink, groceries, vehicle repair, construction, in Newport.

Stop at the Spring Valley Park west of Newport and enjoy the shade of cottonwood trees.  This Park is the oldest rest stop in the state of Nebraska.
